The bookclub at Tianguis is brewing and we are getting ready to launch it again at the beginning of 2009. I want to introduce my bookclub partner in crime, Cynthia Nambo. You will see her posting here with items pertaining to the bookclub.Cynthia and I have been brainstorming recently on getting a virtual bookclub launched, and we will be managing that via El Literati. You will be able to read the book and participate from home as you like and as your time allows.
In the meantime we thought it would be cool to get a wish list started and throw out some ideas on our next book club pick. What book by a Latin@ do you think we should consider?

I would recommend Sonnets from the Puerto Rican by Jack Agüeros and The Latin Deli by Judith Ortiz Cofer.
Agüeros' book for its innovation of the sonnet form to articulate and comment on the many facets of Nuyorican life.
Cofer's book for its balanced blend of prose and poetics to also shine a literary spotlight on suburban Latino culture.
Two on my to-read list are The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Junot Diaz) and Ana Castillo's The Guardians. I know Irasema just read the Diaz book.
I'm up for reading anything new, my all time favorite is Borderlands / Las Fronteras by Gloria Anzaldua, but I've already read that :) First time I ever heard anyone appreciate Spanglish and the complexity of the Mexican-American.
I've never gotten around to reading any Marquez books. I would love to do that. What else?
Anything by Esmeralda Santiago. I once read an essay, which I think was a snippet out of one of her books. I wanted to read her work ever since. She talks about her name and her coming to own it. Below are all her books.

I second A Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, but I'm certainly for all other titles that are recommended. Oh and also The Death of Artemio Cruz by Carlos Fuentes.
I actually have never participated in Tianguis' book club and was quite disappointed when I discovered that Tianguis is closing. Now that I have time for a book club I'm pleased to read that Tianguius' book club will still be in existence. I look forward to our first read of the new year!
